After a myriad of tryouts and training camps spanning the summer months into the fall, USA Hockey announced in early December the final roster that would represent the United States of America at the  2024 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship.

Of those named to the final roster, ten members of our Boston Lady Whalers program were selected. Six members of our 2006 National Elite Team - Alanna Devlin (Marshfield, MA), Molly Boyle (Scituate, MA), Morgan McGathey (Braintree, MA), Kassidy Carmichael (Westford, MA), Maggie Scannell (Wyantskill, NY), and Rose Dwyer (Wynnewood, PA).  Additionally, two members of our 2007 National Elite Team were chosen - Caroline Averill (Wayland, MA) and Ellie Dimatos (Princeton, NJ), as well as two members of our 2008 National Elite Team - Mary Derrenbacher (Raleigh, NC) and Maggie Averill (Wayland, MA).

Team USA began Round Robin play on January 7th when they opened up against Slovakia, a game in which they came out on top by a score of 7-1. Caroline Averill was named Player of the Game, leading the offense with 2 goals, while Maggie Scannell and Morgan McGathey added single tallies to help pace the United States to a victory in their inaugural matchup.

In Game 2, the United States faced off against Team Switzerland and left with a similar outcome, getting the best of the Swiss by a score of 8-1. Alanna Devlin kicked off the scoring, and added an assist on the second goal. Maggie Scannell tallied a goal and as well as two helpers, Morgan McGathey chipped in with a pair of assists, Maggie Averill unleashed a blast from the point for a goal, Mary Derrenbacher tallied two assists, Kassidy Carmichael had a goal, and Molly Boyle  an assist for a well-balanced attack.

Game 3 was a bit closer than the Americans were used to thus far, as they led just 1-0 after the first period as a result of a nice assist by Ellie Dimatos. However in the second period, three Lady Whalers found the back of the net, which ultimately proved to be the difference as the United States blanked Sweden by a score of 4-0. Mary Derrenbacher kicked off the second period scoring parade on the power play from Maggie Scannell and Dimatos. Morgan McGathey then found the back of the net with Derrenbacher picking up an assist, and Kassidy Carmichael netted the final tally.

Game 4 was the final test of Round Robin, and the United States jumped to a quick 2-0 lead out of the gate without looking back.  In the second period, it was a beautiful setup by Morgan McGathey that resulted in the third goal after having received a great breakout pass from Rose Dwyer. Late in the third, Maggie Scannell sealed the 4-0 win over Germany with a tally of her own, assists going to Mary Derrenbacher and Ellie Dimatos.

The semi-final matchup proved to be the toughest to date. Halfway through the game it was Derrenbacher that broke the 1-1 tie, with Morgan McGathey registering an assist. Five minutes later it was Captain Scannell lighting the lamp for a bit of insurance, and ultimately the US held on to defeat Finland 4-2 to punch their tickets to the Gold Medal game where they would face Czechia.
